The Body- Symbolism of eyes

Symbolism of eyes
From my research into portrait photography the main points of the images that stood out to me was the eyes. I feel by looking into someones eyes can tell you a lot about how the person is feeling as they are very emotive. My idea is to use a model with eyes that are very vibrant and stand out so they are the main focal point in the image. The proverb 'The eyes are the window of the soul' is my main inspiration for my portrait images as I want to capture someones emotions through there eyes. I decided to research other quotes about the eyes being windows to the soul for inspiration.

The eye is the window of the soul, the mouth the door. The intellect, the will, are seen in the eye; the emotions, sensibilities, and affections, in the mouth. The animals look for man's intentions right into his eyes. Even a rat, when you hunt him and bring him to bay, looks you in the eye.- Hiram Powers, American sculptor (1805 - 1873)

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!- Matthew, 6:22-23

Both of the quotes take about how your eyes are the lamp of your body as by looking into someones eyes you can read their emotions.

  1. Hi Sophia,

Enjoyed reading the posts about Brassai and the city at night. Very thorough and informative. It might be useful to summarise at the end of the research - just to make sure the ideas are clear and accessible for you.

The analysis of the image is detailed and the 'subjective feelings' of Brassai might be interesting to further consider. Particularly, where he talks about the underside of the city and its ability to suggest rather than define. M

Please continue to post on the body?M
