For this project I decided to look into photographers and artists that deal with consumerism and consumption in there work. I wanted to look into consumption and consumerism as its a reason why there is so much waste. I focused on shopping consumption especially clothing as the theme of my images are going to be recycling clothing. Each of these photographers use scale and mass to show the amount of consumerism that happens around the world, this inspired my to use a lot of clothing in my own work to capture the same effect.
Chris Jordan
Photographer Chris Jordan looks into America's mass consumption. He photographs objects such as waste, toys, electrical items and anything else that is bought or used on mass consumption. Jordan uses statistics in his work and to create a bold message about mass consumption in America. A sense of scale is used in Jordans work with how the amount of objects he uses in his work and how you can't tell what they are until you zoom in close to them.
Brian Ulrich
'Copia' is a series of work by photographer Brian Ulrich, he explores consumerism in his images. He said 'I have always been interested in the little details that make up the routines and rituals of modern life, finding magical moments in the mundane.' the idea of photographing places that we visit most days such as shopping centres and supermarkets makes you realise how you are a part of consumerism and consumption. Ulrich uses repetition and scale in his work which emphasises the scale of consumption.
Sylvie Fleury
Sylvie Fleury explores the satisfaction people get for purchasing material items. She focuses on women's obsessions with fashion and how they also have to have the new trend or branded items. In 'Shopping Bags' she uses bags with logo's of big fashion houses on them which she says remind her 'how every season they are in charge to stimulate consumer’s appetite'. Fleury makes her images appeal to a female audience by embellishing everyday items and by using very bright and vivid colours. I like the idea of the having female's as the target audience because of the way they are interested in fashion and therefore would be the ones who cause the most consumption. Fleury makes her subjects appear desirable by exagerating the colours and by using metallic and shiny elements, I love the idea of photographing the products as people see them to emphasise how obsessive they are.
Jurgen Teller
Jurgen Teller was the photographer for Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2008 campaign. The images include Victoria Beckham posing in a Marc Jacobs shopping bag and coming out of a shoe box. When talking about the campaign Marc Jacobs said "And I said, 'I like the idea of you being this product, and you being this product that Marc Jacobs producing, like a doll or something," he added. "I explained it to Juergen and he made the big shopping bag and a big box and had Victoria dressed in our clothes." The images look into the disposable nature of fashion by having the model posing in the shopping bag. At the time the images were taken Victoria Beckham was very famous for being a 'wag' and a socialite and by using the her captures modern day icons that could also be disposable as they are celebrities that we love to hate.
Barabra Kruger
Artist Barabra Kruger's picture 'I shop therefore I am' looks at the world as being a consumer culture. Kruger believes that for many of us shopping has turned into a lifestyle consuming at our leisure. The idea that consumer culture has a strong power over people means that some people are using consumption to substitute something else, this is portrayed in Krugar's work. Her image is very powerful with the large bright text in the centre of the picture.
